Social Media or Social Networking is changing so quickly and in turn is having an incredible influence on generations of people around the world and personally I think that it is all for the better. In the video we watched in class, Hans Rosling talked about how we want to have a more unified world. We don't want countries in poverty, we don't want dictators trying to control other human beings, we want to all have the same opportunities for success and happiness. I truly believe that social networking is helping to level the playing field between the rich countries and the poor countries.
Mashable posted an article titled "How Social Media Has Changed Us" and one example it gives is "Ambient Intimacy". Social Media connects us to each other more than any other form of communication ever has before. I can see what my jr high school best friend is up to when I haven't seen her face to face in years. Some people seem to think that social media keeps us from having human interaction but when I run into old friends I can ask them about the trips they took because I saw their instagrams, or I can tweet my location and see if anyone in town wants to have lunch!
I also believe we can connect with people that we may not know. Mashable also said that "social networks may be encouraging younger people to get involved in politics". Facebook is a sea of political page links these days because people want to stay connected to what is going on. Social Media kept us informed to Charlie Hebdo and kept us connected to France. Social Media is keeping information at our figure tips so horrible things don't go unnoticed.
Knowledge truly is power and as long as people that have knowledge keep sharing it with the world through Youtube videos or tweets or whatever it will help those in developing countries that desperately need that information quickly and easily. I think that is how the playing field will continue to level throughout our lifetimes and how the world will stabilize.
